DNB* | Waleran [Waleran de Beaumont], count of Meulan and earl of Worcester (1104-1166), magnate and soldier, was the son of Robert de Beaumont, count of Meulan and earl of Leicester (d. 1118), and Isabel (d. 1147), daughter of Hugues, count of Vermandois. Waleran was born one of twins, according to Orderic Vitalis. He was named Waleran after the first count of Meulan, his great-grandfather. That he was the elder twin is probable because he later had the marriage of his sisters and he inherited the marriage portion of his mother at Elbeuf in Normandy. Waleran and his younger twin, Robert (II), earl of Leicester, were under age when their father died in 1118. They passed into royal wardship and their lands in England and Normandy into the hands of their stepfather, William (II) de Warenne, earl of Surrey, and Nigel d'Aubigny, assisted by Morin du Pin, the late Count Robert's steward, and Ralph, his butler. The twins were kept at court, and appeared in Henry I's entourage at Gisors in 1119, when the king incited them to debate philosophy with the cardinals accompanying Calixtus II. They were knighted and came of age in 1120, before October. Waleran succeeded to Meulan, a small but strategically important county on the Seine above the Norman frontier, and also had his father's great Norman honours of Beaumont, Pont Audemer, and Brionne. In England he acquired properties to the value of £140 in Dorset and Winchester. After an initial stay in Meulan in 1120, Waleran appears to have remained with the curia of Henry I. Late in 1122, however, perhaps moved in part by a desire for military glory, Waleran became implicated in the Norman plot contrived by Amaury, count of Évreux, in favour of William Clito, the son of Robert Curthose. But Henry I was forewarned, and in December 1123 captured Waleran's stronghold at Pont Audemer after a short siege, while on 25 March 1124 Waleran himself, with many of his knights, was taken prisoner after a battle with royal troops at Bourgthéroulde. He remained in captivity, first in Normandy and later in England, until he was received back into royal favour in the summer of 1129. Until the end of the reign Waleran faithfully attended the royal curia in England and Normandy, and he and his twin brother were at the king's side when he died on 1 December 1135. Waleran seems to have come to terms quickly with Stephen's seizure of the throne, although it is unlikely that he was in England for the coronation. He had, however, received grants from the new king before the Easter court of 1136, when most magnates made their submission, and was specially singled out for royal favour, being betrothed to the king's daughter, Matilda, who died in infancy. At this time he may have received Worcester, Droitwich, and the royal demesne in Worcestershire. After Easter 1136 Waleran was sent to Normandy to take charge of its defence against Geoffrey, count of Anjou, and the Empress Matilda. This he successfully accomplished, repulsing Angevin raids and defeating internal rebellion in a battle near Acquigny on 3 October. He welcomed Stephen to a largely pacified duchy in spring 1137, and was rewarded with custody of the county of Évreux, and a grant of the vicomté of the city. Waleran's influence in central Normandy was by now unchallengeable, and he felt secure enough to return with the king to England in November 1137, whereupon he was sent to repulse a Scots invasion of the north, which he accomplished by the relief of Wark Castle. But in May 1138 he was back, dealing with new outbreaks in Normandy. After further successes, accomplished with aid from France, Waleran devastated the Norman estates of his principal adversary, the earl of Gloucester, and ended the stubborn rebellion of the Tosny family. Late in 1138 Waleran returned once more to Stephen in England, and at this time received investiture as earl of Worcester, an event he apparently marked by the foundation of a large Cistercian abbey at Bordesley in November. There is evidence that his next mission was to lead a large embassy to the Christmas court of Louis VII at or near Paris, to confirm the alliance Stephen had made earlier with Louis VI and perhaps begin negotiations to marry Louis's sister Constance to Eustace, son of King Stephen. He returned to England about Easter 1139. Unchallengeable at the head of a great aristocratic party, Waleran engineered the downfall of his rival, Bishop Roger of Salisbury, in June, obtaining the replacement of Roger's son as chancellor by his own cousin, Philip de Harcourt. The outbreak of civil war in England late in 1139 made Waleran the principal target of Angevin supporters. Robert, earl of Gloucester, devastated his city of Worcester on 7 November 1139. Taking this as a personal insult, Waleran revenged it by the sack of Tewkesbury and the wasting of the Vale of Evesham in early spring 1140, saying, as he returned to Worcester, that he had never carried out so great a pillage in England or Normandy. Waleran's influence over King Stephen was effectively ended by the battle of Lincoln on 2 February 1141. Although Waleran escaped capture, and carried on the royalist fight for some months after the battle, he had surrendered to the empress before September, being threatened with the loss of his Norman lands by Geoffrey of Anjou's invasion of central Normandy. The surrender did not materially lessen his possessions, for Worcester was confirmed to him, as were his Norman possessions; he even added to them by marriage to Agnes, daughter of the late Count Amaury of Évreux, late in 1141 or early in 1142. She brought him Norman estates and the honour of Gournay, east of Paris. However, according to Robert de Torigni, Geoffrey of Anjou never trusted him. Waleran led the Anglo-Norman contingent that accompanied Louis VII on the second crusade (1147–8). It seems to be from this point that he began a dangerous flirtation with the Capetians, to enhance his uncertain position in Normandy. In 1153 his capture was engineered by Henry Plantagenet, acting with Robert de Montfort, Waleran's nephew (whom Waleran had dispossessed of Montfort-sur-Risle). The count also lost his English earldom at this time. Waleran remained thereafter an outsider to the court of Henry II, and vulnerable in any warfare between Henry and Louis VII, with whom he kept up a friendship. In 1160 Waleran sided with Louis in a campaign fought in the Vexin, and as a result lost his Norman lands and castles. These had been restored by July 1162, but Waleran's active career ended with this disaster. He fell ill in the spring of 1166, and entered as a monk the ancestral abbey of Préaux, where he died on 9 or 10 April. He was buried there next to his father, below the chapter house floor. He was succeeded in his lands by his son, Count Robert, except at Gournay, which remained to his widow, Countess Agnes, and passed successively to his younger sons Amaury and Roger de Meulan. He left three other sons, and married one daughter to Geoffrey de Mayenne, and another to William (I) de Beauchamp of Elmley (d. 1170). Like his twin brother, Waleran was a literate man, a writer of letters and, according to Geoffrey of Monmouth, of Latin verse. He was a friend of the Cistercian pope Eugenius III, and a generous patron of the order; he founded Bordesley (1138) and (in response to a vow) Le Valasse in Normandy (1150)—both unfortunately abstracted from his advocacy by the Empress Matilda. He had a deserved reputation for liberality and loyalty to his followers. His less attractive traits lay in a purposeless acquisitiveness and heedless brutality which did not fit him for the role of viceroy and statesman into which he thrust himself.
