DNB* | Burgh, William de (d. 1206), baron, was the brother of Hubert de Burgh, justiciar of England, father of Richard de Burgh, lord of Connacht, and ancestor of the de Burghs, earls of Ulster. Closely associated with John, lord of Ireland, he probably accompanied him on his expedition to Ireland in 1185, and became John's principal agent in the conquest and organization of northern Munster. While other leading Anglo-Norman invaders are vividly described by Gerald of Wales, knowledge of this turbulent frontier lord has to be gleaned from hostile Gaelic sources or administrative records. Perhaps the best clue to his character lies in the study of the imposing sites of his castles at Kilfeacle, Carrigogunnell, and Shanid, among others, which reveals a powerful personality capable of impressing his authority on fiercely contested borders. Although de Burgh's military ability undoubtedly accounts for his enduring achievement, he owed much to John's favour and, less certainly, a marriage alliance with the Ó Briain of Thomond. The concentration of his castles along the northern periphery of John's territories in Waterford and Lismore, chiefly at Tibberaghny, Kilsheelan, and Kilfeacle, suggests that John used him both to protect his demesne and to initiate the conquest of Tipperary in conjunction with Theobald Walter and Philip of Worcester. Much the same pattern is evident in Limerick, conquered in the closing years of the century, where the royal city of Limerick was protected in the west by de Burgh's castle at Carrigogunnell, and in the east by his castle at Castleconnell. Described in 1201 as vicarius Momonie (‘seneschal of Munster’) , de Burgh was the royal governor of the city until July 1203, when he was superseded by William (III) de Briouze. The measure of John's favour may also be gauged by the curious fact that among the tenants-in-chief of the honour of Limerick de Burgh alone was exempted from owing fealty to Briouze. According to one Irish source de Burgh was married to a daughter of Domnall Mór Ó Briain, which is consistent with the fact that he was frequently accompanied by his Ó Briain allies, hereditary enemies of the Mac Carthaig and the Ó Conchobhair, in his numerous campaigns in Desmond and Connacht. Presumably this alliance gave him the means to prosecute his territorial interests in Desmond and Connacht, while leaving his castles on the Thomond frontier secure from attack. The erection of the de Burgh castle at Kilfeacle in 1193 brought a sharp response from Domnall Mac Carthaig, who destroyed it three years later. In 1199, 1201, and again in 1202 there were campaigns in Desmond led, in the latter years, by de Burgh with the assistance of the Ó Briain. The effect of these determined campaigns in the west and south left de Burgh freer to pursue his next priority, the conquest of the kingdom of Connacht, which he had been granted by John probably before 1195, when Cathal Croibdearg Ó Conchobhair, king of Connacht, launched a devastating attack on Anglo-Norman castles in Munster, including de Burgh's castle of Castleconnell. In 1200, 1202, and again in 1203 de Burgh intervened in the dynastic conflicts in Connacht, no doubt with a view to making good his territorial claims there, but in doing so he incurred the wrath of the justiciar, Meiler fitz Henry, who forced him to abandon Connacht and submit after besieging him in Limerick. De Burgh surrendered three castles and twelve hostages, besides a son and a daughter. Throughout the tangled dispute with Meiler he retained the king's confidence. As early as October 1203 the king commanded Meiler to restore de Burgh's castles of Kilfeacle and Askeaton, although he was to retain his other pledges in safe custody. The dispute was still not determined in September 1204, even though the king ordered that all of de Burgh's lands be restored, except for Connacht, which seems to have been the source of the trouble. William de Burgh probably died in January or February 1206. On 7 April the king commanded Meiler to take his lands into the king's hand. Although he was married in or before 1193, there is no certainty about the identity of his wife. She may have been an unnamed daughter of Domnall Mór Ó Briain, but the authority for this statement rests solely on the evidence of a late medieval Gaelic genealogy. She is certainly not the Alienora, wife of William de Burgis, mentioned in the pipe roll of 1 Richard I. The order to Meiler on 5 October 1203 made reference to the sons of William de Burgh in his custody, which probably intended Richard, his heir, and Hubert, who became prior of Athassel and later bishop of Limerick (1224–50). The annals of Loch Cé refer in 1203 to an unnamed daughter, of whom nothing is known. De Burgh was almost certainly buried in his important foundation of Augustinian canons at Athassel, Tipperary. C.
