DNB* | Aigle, Richer de l' (c.1095-1176), baron, the eldest son of Gilbert de l'Aigle and Juliana, daughter of Geoffroi, count of Mortagne, was a member of a family with a tradition of service to the Norman dukes. His great-grandfather, Engenulf, had been killed at Hastings and his grandfather Richer during a Norman campaign in Maine. His father was a leading member of Henry I's military household and had received lands around Pevensey in Sussex which had been forfeited to the crown by Guillaume, count of Mortain, in 1106. On the death of his father about 1117 Richer sought from King Henry, in addition to the family property on the southern Norman marches, his father's English lands. When Henry refused on the grounds that the English lands should go to his younger brothers, Geoffroi and Engenulf, Richer carried out his threat to change allegiance to the king of France, Louis VI. The timely intervention of his mother's brother, Rotrou, count of Perche, secured the English lands for him, though he was probably estranged from the king for the best part of a year. In 1131 Richer was in possession of the Sussex lands and it must have been at about this period that his acquaintance with the Becket family led to a friendship with the young Thomas Becket. In 1136 when Normandy waited for the arrival of King Stephen, with Geoffrey Plantagenet, count of Anjou, poised to assert the claims of his wife, the Empress Matilda, Richer was again involved in disorder on the Norman frontier. In 1137 he and his uncle Rotrou agreed to support King Stephen, and he was granted the castle at Bonsmoulins as a reward for his services. He was in England at the royal court in 1139, and in September 1140, while leading a company of knights to England, he was captured by agents of the earl of Leicester and imprisoned until his uncle Rotrou secured his release. In the early 1150s he seems to have established good relations with the new duke of Normandy, the young Henry Plantagenet, whose charter of liberties for Rouen he witnessed, but in 1152 he was involved in further lawlessness and Henry burned his castle at Bonsmoulins. It comes as no surprise therefore that in the 1153 settlement between King Stephen and Henry the de l'Aigle family lands in Sussex were assigned to Stephen's younger son, William, and in 1158 Richer was forced to surrender Bonsmoulins to Henry II. In the late 1150s his foundation of a Fontevraudine priory at La Chaise du Theil, near l'Aigle, received a royal confirmation from King Henry, which may indicate a return to favour. By the mid-1160s Richer had regained his Sussex lands and in 1166 made a return dealing with their knight service, although his returns to the Norman inquiry in the 1170s were incomplete. Richer was a benefactor of the monasteries of Lyre, La Trappe, and Thiron, as well as the priories of Wilmington in Sussex, Notre Dame du Désert, and St Sulpice-de-Lisle in Normandy. He married Beatrix, whose parentage is unknown, and was the father of Richer, Roger, Engenulph, and a daughter, Juliana, wife of Gilbert of Tillières. Richer died in 1176, probably on 24 August, and was buried in the priory of St Sulpice-sur-Risle. He was a cross-channel magnate of the second rank, whose family fortunes in England were founded on the breakup of the great honours of William the Conqueror's companions. His landed interests in England, which may well have been greater than the family's original Norman estates, were finally resumed by the crown in 1231 when his grandson Gilbert died without direct heirs.
