Edward Chamberlain

Christening | 22 December 1480 | Weston, Oxfordshire, England |

DNB* | | Chamberlayne, Sir Edward (1480-1543), gentleman and soldier, was the first son of Sir Richard Chamberlayne of Coton, Northamptonshire, and Sybil, daughter of Sir Richard Fowler of Rycote, Oxfordshire, and was baptized at Weston on 22 December 1480. The Chamberlaynes traced their lineage back to the eleventh century and the Anglo-Norman house of Tancarville from whom the hereditary chamberlains to the duke of Normandy had been drawn. By the sixteenth century they held land in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, and Northamptonshire, as well as pursuing a claim against the duke of Buckingham to certain property in Kent. It was, however, in Oxfordshire that the greater part of the family's land was to be found, inherited by Edward upon his father's death on 28 August 1496. An important addition to his paternal inheritance was made in 1505 when his mother acquired the lease to the manor of Shirburn in Oxfordshire from her brother Richard Fowler which passed to her son upon her death in 1525. Chamberlayne married Cecily, daughter of Sir John Verney of Pendley, Hertfordshire.
It was as a leading member of the Oxfordshire gentry that Chamberlayne would perform his most important service to the crown. Between 1506 and 1539 he served as a commissioner of the peace for Oxfordshire. On at least six occasions his name was on the county's sheriff roll. In November 1523 and August 1524 he was chosen as a commissioner to collect the subsidy for Oxfordshire and Norfolk. In 1529 he represented Wallingford in parliament and in 1530 was one of those appointed to assess the value of Wolsey's possessions in Oxfordshire. Although mostly on the periphery of national affairs, Chamberlayne did take part in a number of the great events of Henry VIII's reign. He joined the funeral cortège of Henry VII as a squire for the body. In 1512 he accompanied the marquess of Dorset to Biscay, leading twenty men in the company of William, Lord Sandys, and the following year he took part in both the ill-fated naval expedition of Edmund Howard and the main invasion of France which culminated in the capture of Tournai. In recognition of his service he was included among those knighted by Henry in Tournai Cathedral on 24 September 1513. Nine years later he returned to France, this time serving in the earl of Surrey's expedition into Picardy between August and October 1522 which ended in the abortive siege of Hesdin. Chamberlayne was also involved in ceremonial diplomacy as a member of the king's entourage in his meetings with François I and Charles V in July 1520 at the Field of Cloth of Gold and Gravelines, and twelve years later, in October 1532, at the second Anglo-French summit held at Calais and Boulogne. On occasion he was resident at court, and was in attendance both at the 1517 banquet held at Greenwich and at the marriage celebrations of Henry and Anne Boleyn in May 1533.
Chamberlayne's energies were, however, mostly devoted to local responsibilities and the management of his Oxfordshire estates. These represented not only the greater part of his assets but also the lion's share of his liabilities. On an unspecified date Chamberlayne was charged in Star Chamber with using his position as lieutenant and keeper of Woodstock Park, granted to him in 1508, to extort money from his tenants. The case appears to have done him little harm since he, in tandem with his eldest son, Leonard Chamberlayne, was reappointed to the office in 1532. At about this time Sir Edward faced further difficulties when this same son sued him for mismanagement of the Shirburn estates which had been entailed to Leonard in 1528. Chamberlayne was sixty-three when he died on 10 September 1543; he was buried at Woodstock, leaving three sons, Leonard, Edward, and Ralph, and at least three daughters.
This Edward Chamberlayne should not be confused with Sir Edward Chamberlayne (1470-1541) of Gedding, Suffolk, second son of Sir Ralph Chamberlayne. It was this Edward Chamberlayne who in company with Sir Edmund Bedingfield was entrusted with the captivity of Katherine of Aragon at Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire between May 1534 and her death on 7 January 1536.
