Marriage* | 1626 | Baldock, Hertfordshire, England, A record of marriage for a John Pratt is found in Baldock, Hertfordshire (less than two miles from Stevenage), in 1626 to Elizabeth Young. Since no marriage record is found for John Pratt in early New England records, it is assumed that he married prior to his emigration. In John Pratt's will, it mentions his wife's Christian name as Elizabeth, and family records do not list a maiden name. Whether the Baldock marriage record refers to the emigrant John Pratt cannot be verified, and it is somewhat questionable whether he would have married at the age of nineteen. However, it is probable that John Pratt was married prior to his immigration as he participated in the original Cambridge land distribution, while his younger and unmarried brother William did not.

- [S40] Edgar J. Bullard, Bullard And Allied Families, LIEUT. WILLIAM PRATT, born about 1602, who came from the Parish of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, England, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1633. He came in the company of the Rev. Thomas Hooker, and with him was his brother John, to whom a lot was assigned in the first division of Cambridge lands. Both William and John went with Hooker to Hartford in 1636, and appear there among the original proprietors. Both drew their home lots in the first division of land in February, 1639. William Pratt was one of the band who went from Hartford in the expedition against the Pequots in 1637, and received by the order of the General court a grant of 100 acres of land in recognition of his services. In 1645, he sold his land in Hartford and removed to Saybrook, Connecticut, where he settled at what is now the borough of Essex, October 3, 1661. He was made a lieutenant of the trainband, and from 1666 to 1670 was town commissioner. He represented the town of Saybrook in the General Assembly from 1666 to 1678, inclusive, and was a man of note in the colony, owning large tracts of land in Saybrook and also in the township of Hebron, which he doubtless received as one of the legatees of the Indian Uncas and his sons. William Pratt married, about 1640, Elizabeth, daughter of John Clark of Saybrook and Milford, Connecticut. (See note.) The exact date of the death of William Pratt is not known, but as he attended the General court as a deputy, May 8, 1678, and is spoken of as deceased the following February, he must have died between those dates. He was the father of eight children as follows:
