Note* | | There is a 10 year gap (1752-1762) in the baptismal records of the Woodbridge Congregation where the Tolles family was having their children baptized. (Rachel was baptized in 1750). Jemima's baptism would have fallen into this gap. The evidence that she belongs to this family is that she is placed there by Pratt family records, and that her sister Chloe, who is documented in the Ebenezer Tolles family, married Chalker Pratt, the brother of Obadiah Pratt, making it likely that this is the correct Tolles family. No other has been found by me in this county of New York. -- Gordon Banks |

Anecdote* | 1668 | Mr. Chapman and Lieut. Wm. Pratt were chosen commissioners by the plantation for Saybrook and Lyme, May, 1669; also, in May, 1671; also, May, 1672 and '73. Mr. Chapman of Saybrook, O. Bruen and John Smith of New London, were appointed by the General Court to settle difficulties with the Niantick Indians for burning fences in 1653. He was grand juror the same year; also, grand juror, 1661. In 1653 the General Court ordered 65 men raised from the several towns in the colony to be forthwith prepared with provisions, on a day's warning to march, and ordered that one man in each town should be appointed a committee for the constables to advise with about pressing the men for the expedition. Capt. Mason, Good'n Clark and Mr. Robert Chapman were appointed in Saybrook. In 1654 a like order was made, and John Clark and Robert Chapman appointed a committee to advise with the Major (Major Mason) as to thepressing of men and necessaries for the service in the Narragansett expedition.

Note* | | "Pratt, William, Hartford, one of the first settlers, as early as 1639. There are many of the name in the county of Hartford. He moved to Saybrook, and was made a lieutenant there in 1661--he became a prominent man there." 10 |
Note | | "LIEUT. WILLIAM PRATT, born about 1602, who came from the Parish of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, England, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1633. He came in the company of the Rev. Thomas Hooker, and with him was his brother John, to whom a lot was assigned in the first division of Cambridge lands. Both William and John went with Hooker to Hartford in 1636, and appear there among the original proprietors. Both drew their home lots in the first division of land in February, 1639. William Pratt was one of the band who went from Hartford in the expedition against the Pequots in 1637, and received by the order of the General court a grant of 100 acres of land in recognition of his services. In 1645, he sold his land in Hartford and removed to Saybrook, Connecticut, where he settled at what is now the borough of Essex, October 3, 1661. He was made a lieutenant of the trainband, and from 1666 to 1670 was town commissioner. He represented the town of Saybrook in the General Assembly from 1666 to 1678, inclusive, and was a man of note in the colony, owning large tracts of land in Saybrook and also in the township of Hebron, which he doubtless received as one of the legatees of the Indian Uncas and his sons. William Pratt married, about 1640, Elizabeth, daughter of John Clark of Saybrook and Milford, Connecticut. The exact date of the death of William Pratt is not known, but as he attended the General court as a deputy, May 8, 1678, and is spoken of as deceased the following February, he must have died between those dates. He was the father of eight children as follows:

Hannah Hough
F, #48, b. 1 April 1683
Baptism* | 1 April 1683 | Woodbury, Connecticut1 |
Marriage* | 8 October 1700 | Saybrook, Middlesex, CT, Principal=Ensign William Pratt2,3,4 |
Note* | | Hannah Hough is not the daughter of William Hough and Anne Lothrop, as most genealogies report. This was proven in an article by William W. Hough in the March 2007 issue of Connecticut Nutmegger. Willam and Anne Hough's daughter born near the same time was named Ann, or Anna. She has been linked mistakenly since it was formerly believed that Jonathan Hough died young. Unfortunately, this means that we lose the extensive Lothrop ancestry. -GEB5 |
