DNB* | | Howard, Sir William [William of Wiggenhall] (b. in or before 1255, d. 1308), justice, was probably born at Wiggenhall in Norfolk. There seems to be no contemporary evidence to support the later tradition that made him the son of one John Howard and his wife, Lucy Germund. Between 1276 and 1279 he received a number of appointments to act as the attorney of Norfolk litigants in the common bench. By the mid-1280s he was in practice as a serjeant and is known to have acted in the Essex eyre of 1285, the Norfolk eyre of 1286, and the Wiltshire eyre of 1289. His first known appearance as a common-bench serjeant was in Trinity term 1290. When the eyre circuits resumed in June 1292, Howard offered his services to clients in the eyres of the southern circuit. The reports show him as among the most active serjeants on that circuit. He resumed practice in the common bench in Hilary term 1294 and can then be traced appearing for clients in almost every term until Easter term 1297.
Howard's first appointment as a regular justice came in June 1293 when he and John Batesford were appointed as assize justices in the seven northern counties. Between 1293 and 1297 he seems to have fitted his assize work into the vacations between eyre and common-bench sessions. Howard ceased acting as an assize justice on his appointment as a fifth, additional, justice of the common bench in October 1297. The final concords show him sitting in the court every term until Trinity term 1308. The reports, however, appear to indicate that he was absent from the court in Trinity and Michaelmas terms 1302, in Trinity term 1305, and in Hilary and Easter terms 1306. Other evidence confirms that he and two of his colleagues were absent from the court (then at York) while attending a session of parliament in London in Trinity term 1302, and suggest that his later absences in 1305 and 1306 were connected with his work as a trailbaston justice. He was also absent from the court for much, if not all, of Easter and Trinity terms 1307 while leading a trailbaston circuit. The reports also show an active and capable judge, well able to hold his own with successive chief justices (Mettingham and Hengham) and his very able colleague William Bereford.
Howard was twice married. His first wife, Alice, is said to have been the daughter of Robert of Ufford. His second wife, also named Alice, is said to have been the daughter of John Fitton of Wiggenhall and had previously been married to Simon Constable of Burton Constable in Yorkshire, who had died in prison in 1294 while refusing to plead on a number of criminal charges, including that of poisoning his first wife. Alice was successful in obtaining her dower from Constable's lands, although there was also a rival second wife, Katherine of Weelsby. Howard seems to have married Alice between 1297 and 1300, by which date he had been knighted. His son and heir, John, was almost certainly a child of his first marriage, and this may also have been the case with his second son, William. Howard's traceable property acquisitions were all concentrated in Norfolk, in or close to his home village, his connection with which led to his being sometimes known as William of Wiggenhall. They included the manor of East Winch, which he appears to have acquired through his second wife's first marriage to Simon Constable; it was at East Winch, in a chapel on the south side of the chancel, that he was buried. Howard seems to have died shortly before 24 August 1308, when he was replaced as an assize justice and recorded as deceased.
