DNB* | Ælfthryth (d. 929), princess, was the youngest of three daughters of King Alfred (d. 899) and Queen Ealhswith, daughter of Æthelred Mucel, ealdorman of the ‘Gaini’. She also had two brothers. According to her father's biographer Asser, she was educated with her brother Edward at the royal court, where ‘under the solicitous care of tutors and nurses … they have attentively learned the Psalms, and books in English and especially English poems, and they frequently make use of books’ (Keynes and Lapidge, 90–91). Between 893 and 899 she married Baudouin (II), count of Flanders (d. 918), with whom she had two sons, Arnulf (I) of Flanders (d. 965) and Adelulf of Boulogne and Ternois (d. 933) as well as two daughters, Ealhswith and Eormenthryth, whose existence is mentioned exclusively by the chronicler Æthelweard. By her father's will she received Wellow, on the Isle of Wight, Ashton (perhaps Ashton Keynes in modern Wiltshire), Chippenham, and £100. From the mid-eleventh century, in the Liber traditionum and a spurious charter, the monks of St Peter at Ghent claimed that in 918 she gave them land at Lewisham, Greenwich, and Woolwich. Count Baudouin died on 2 January 918 and was buried in the abbey of St Peter at Ghent, at the explicit request of Ælfthryth who wished to be buried beside him, and thus not like his father in St Bertin at St Omer, which was closed to women. There is no contemporary evidence for the year and date of Ælfthryth's death: the eleventh-century annals of St Peter at Ghent are the only source for its having occurred in the year 929, while her epitaph, written c.1000, gives 7 June as her obit. DNB* | Diarmait mac Máel na mBó (d. 1072), king of Leinster and claimant to the high-kingship of Ireland, was the son of Donnchad mac Diarmata (fl. 1003), and Aife, daughter of Gilla Pátraic mac Donnchada, king of Osraige (Ossory). His customary patronymic máel na mbó (servant of the cattle) had been the usual identification for his father. Diarmait's dynasty was Uí Chennselaig of south-east Leinster and he was king of Leinster between 1042 and 1072; but he was involved not only in Ireland, but also in the Irish Sea and England. The earliest notices of Diarmait are the blinding of a rival in 1036, a raid on the viking town of Waterford in 1037, and raids on several monasteries in 1040. By 1041 he had begun a feud with Donnchad Ó Briain, the king of Munster and claimant of the Irish high-kingship, who was also the father of Diarmait's wife Derborgaill (d. 1080); their son was Murchad (d. 1070). Donnchad began by burning Ferns (Wexford), in revenge for which Diarmait attacked Killeshin (Laois). By 1048 Donnchad forced Diarmait's submission, which Diarmait promptly disregarded by leading a raid into Munster. Diarmait became involved in the first of his foreign adventures in 1051 when he provided refuge for two Anglo-Saxon nobles, the brothers Harold and Leofwine Godwineson, during their exile from England. In the summer of 1052 he supplied his guests with a fleet to reinstate themselves in England. Also in 1052 Diarmait captured the important viking town of Dublin after forcing the king Echmarcach Rögnvaldsson to flee. Despite his increasing power, in 1049 and 1053 he was again forced to submit to Donnchad Ó Briain. Using Dublin as a base, Diarmait began to raid northwards and in 1053 his army attacked Meath, which it would raid three more times, in 1059, 1068, and 1072. In 1054 he allied with Gilla Pátraic of Osraige for a raid on Munster, and in 1057 he raided Scattery Island. In 1058 Diarmait made an alliance with Donnchad Ó Briain's nephew Toirdelbach, who hated his uncle for his role in the murder of his father, Tadc. The allies raided Limerick and Diarmait defeated Donnchad at the Galtee Mountains. Diarmait returned the next year and burned Donnchad's forts. Diarmait again became involved in affairs outside Ireland in 1058, when an attempted conquest of England by the Norwegian heir-apparent Magnus, son of the Norwegian king, Harald Hardrada, used troops from Dublin. This could have encouraged Diarmait in other foreign ventures, and in 1061 his son Murchad led a fleet to the Isle of Man, where he forced his father's old foe Echmarcach Rögnvaldsson to pay tribute. Diarmait busied himself with the destruction of his father-in-law, Donnchad, and in 1062 he and Toirdelbach defeated Donnchad's army at Cleghile (Tipperary); Donnchad submitted to Diarmait. Political assassination was used when Diarmait and Toirdelbach paid one Áed Ó Conchobar 30 ounces of gold to kill a rival prince in 1066. After his friend Harold Godwineson was defeated and slain in October 1066, Diarmait's court became one of the centres of the Anglo-Saxon resistance. He gave refuge to members of Harold's family, including his sons, Godwine, Edmund, and Magnus, and supplied fleets for their unsuccessful invasions of England in 1068 and 1069. Misfortune would mark Diarmait's final years after the deaths of his sons Glúniairn and Murchad in 1070. Disorder in Leinster that year was put down only with the assistance of Toirdelbach, who was forced to return on the same errand the following year. In 1071 warfare broke out in Diarmait's own family, between his grandson Domnall and nephew Donnchad. The old king made one last expedition, in 1072, into Meath, but in the battle of Odba, 7 February 1072, he was defeated and killed by Conchobar Ó Maíl Shechlainn. Benjamin T. Hudson Sources W.
