Capsule Biography

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1944, where my father was a meteorologist with the Weather Bureau. I graduated from Rio Grande High School in the South Valley. I attended the University of New Mexico, and received my BS, MS, and PhD in Physics. In 1973, there were few teaching jobs in Physics, and I didn't want to work in defense, so I went to medical school at the University of Chicago, graduating in 1977. I completed an Internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and returned to the University of Chicago for Neurology residency. In 1981, I joined the Neurology faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, and also joining Harry Pople and Jack Myers at the Decision Systems Laboratory where we did research on artificial intelligence in medicine. In 1996 I married Charlee Hodson of Oak Harbor, Washington whom I met in a discussion group on the Internet. I left academic medicine in 1997 and moved to Oregon, becoming the only neurologist in Yamhill County (30 miles southwest of Portland). I am currently enjoying practicing general neurology in a great place to live with a very good medical community and a relaxing atmosphere. I still fool around with computers as well as playing old-time music on the banjo.
