- Dimensions: 21 x 35 inches
- Based on an immunofluorescent photomicrograph of brain cells taken by Nancy Kedersha. Used with permission.
- Cotton fabric plus rayon, mylar, and metallic threads
- Free-motion embroidery and quilting done on a Bernina 165 by Charlee Banks in 2003.
- Notes: A microscope provides another pathway for me, a former biologist, to see the world. In an immunofluorescent microscope, cells, which are in reality colorless, can glow in unusual colors against a black background. I made this quilt to show that view of cells of the brain. I tried to capture delicate cell structures with free-motion “thread painting” (which I learned from Libby Lehman) using rayon, Mylar, and metallic threads on Amish black cotton. This quilt was made for display at our medical practice, Willamette Valley Neurology.
- Exhibitions: Juried into Pacific Northwest Quiltfest; Seattle, WA; August 2004. Juried into "Off the Beaten Path," an all-Oregon art quilt exhibit at Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, OR; December 2004.
